Want to boost your professional networks try these! University of Manchester Careers Blog Following on from the networking sessions at International Students Careers Week, last week, I thought I would share details of the professional and global networking opportunities that were mentioned. Some are exclusively for international students, some specific to career specialisms or interests, and some quite generic. Based upon the Global Graduates into Global Leaders report, however, it is fair to say that growing your global professional networks can help you to boost your potential for career development and progression, so take a look and see which networks you could explore: NEW!     Connecting global talent to international employers The Universum Talent Network For international students at targeted UK universities, this is a new network to help to put you in touch with global recruiters. You can also find out more about how you match organisations requirements. International students at The University of Manchester have been invited to join. The network is new and growing, but so far there has been particular interest from Asian recruiters. Register online at: www.universumtalentnetworks.com/uk Network with international alumni The India Manchester Graduate Network   The China Manchester Graduate Network These are two LinkedIn groups that the Careers Service set up to allow students with an interest in India/ China to network online with alumni/fellow students from or in these countries. Typically the networks members are nationals of their home country, but not exclusively. If you would like to network with Indian/Chinese and other alummni now based in these countries or around the world, why not take a look.   If you join LinkedIn and set up a profile for yourself (all free) you can search for both of these under Groups and request to join. The University of Manchester Alumni Association Although we currently do not have specific networks for other countries just yet, we do have an excellent LinkedIn group for The University of Manchester Alumni Association. There are sub-groups for certain countries / regions, and there are many international members in the main group. Tip view the members and add a country of interest to the search box to see what comes out. Remember, though, that alumni are on these groups for various reasons (professional, social, career change) so if you are seeking to network with anyone, professionalism will be key. Networks for entrepreneurs The TiE network A global network for entrepreneurs but with local Chapters where you can attend events, network, find a mentor and more. There is a Manchester Chapter,   who have run events with The Business School in the past too. Student membership is low cost and worth exploring. www.tie.org Professional bodies Find out about you can become a student member of the relevant professional body for your profession/ career interests. Many have student membership rates. Joining these bodies give you the chance to attend local events, meet professionals, find a mentor (or sometimes even be allocated one), and generally boost your career and sector knowledge. Dont wait to be invited, contact them and see what you can tap into. Some professional bodies do careers talks and insight days for students too. For those we hear about we put them onto Careerslink, but some we dont, so get onto their site in case there is one coming up. You can find out about all professional bodies in the UK at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_professional_associations_in_the_United_Kingdom   (some are also connecting to their international counterparts or setting up branches in other countries too check their sites). Other global professional networks and Im sure there are more! Hre are a few that I have come across: Engineering forum of Nigerians a network for professional and student engineers from Nigeria currently in the UK. One of their organisers was a Manchester graduate from Nigeria when I met them last, and they confirmed that they welcome student members and offer great support. UK India Business Council Next Generation   The Next Generation division of UKIBC is all about a networking platform for the next generation of business leaders/entrepreneurs with a UK/India perspective. They have special rates for students and offer events and online networking provision. Explore at:  www.ukibc.com/business-services/ukibc_programmes/next_generation/ NEW!   Silu.com for the China job market Another new online network this one is targeted at professionals and students with an interest in China. Containing career opportunities, useful information on the job market and more besides, this network allows you to find out more about the graduate job market for Chinese returners. Again, free to join. This site is a sister site to e-financialcareers.com for those budding financiers!   some of you will have met Carina from Silu at last weeks panel.   http://mkt.silu.com/cds/ Networks for international returners If you are planning to return to your home country after graduation and will be job hunting, dont forget the networks for returners. You may even be able to join them early? The British Council usually have a network in countries, and can also provide e-shots and job fair details.   Look for the alumni pages of the British Councils website in your home country.   British Council offices are increasingly doing more to support international returners. For example, last year (Feb. 2012) the British Council Pakistan collaborated on a graduate job fair with Pakistan recruiters here on campus. This year (Feb 2013) there will be a job fair in Pakistan for UK returners too. The Association of British Scholars India This organisation has regional chapters and is a good starting point for Indian graduates returning to India. http://www.abs-india.org All International

And you come in all generations, genders and cultures. Now, I’m sure none of you reading this are dinosaurs but if any of your friends say the following phrases, then break the news to them gently: “If you hear of a job that I’d be a fit for, then call me.” “Let’s do coffee sometime. I’m looking for a new gig.” “What do you think I should do next?” “I’m looking for a challenging position that leverages my skills in…” “I don’t know anybody, so can you introduce me to your network?” “I’ll send you my résumé. Will you look at it and recommend jobs you might know of?” “After I get my MBA, I’m going to go get a bigger job.” “There aren’t any good jobs posted. I’ll know it when I see it.” “I’ve applied three times to company and they never get back to me. How inconsiderate.” “I don’t get that social media stuff for job searching. It’s a waste of time so I’ll just focus on strong face-to-face connecting.” “I’ll reconnect with some headhunters I used to know.” Welcome to the new era of job search. Regardless if you are looking within your current company or in other companies, today’s competitive field for executive positions requires new techniques. The calculators moved to Excel, typewriters to WORD, mailed résumés and cover letters are now submitted through online tools, and the game has changing massively in the past two years! You need to get current and stay current since the hiring practices will change even more rapidly in the next 5 years. Amazingly, there are so many online articles and tools to help you that it may be overwhelming. But how many hours have you invested in yourself by reading some? Basic reading should be the LinkedIn tutorials and multiple résumé websites who can help get your résumé up to date. But go beyond and re-tool yourself now. From your attitude to your preparation and all the way through applying and interviewing. While my upcoming book “Cut the Crap, Get a Job! A New Job Search Process for a New Era” will coach you through every step, here is one immediate action for you: Build a high quality, 100% complete LinkedIn profile. I recently coached Robert, a job seeker, and asked him if his profile was at 100%, which he promptly replied “yes”. And it was by LinkedIn’s measurement but it was terrible! It had a goofy picture, his full résumé was not detailed within each section, no powerful introduction, and only one endorsement. On most LinkedIn profiles, I learn about their prior job description or see industry acronyms, but don’t get an at-a-glance understanding of their skills they can bring to me, a hiring manager! Rule #1: If you’re not on LinkedIn, you don’t exist to recruiters and hiring managers. And when I say “recruiter”, many companies have in-house recruiters who do the primary searches and screens of candidates. They are fluent in LinkedIn. Rule #2: If your LinkedIn profile is poor or inaccurate OR embellishes the truth, you could be knocked out of the running. There is so much more you need to learn as job seekers and it’s all at your fingertips (and quite fun, too!). I have been working for Fortune 500’s for 30+ years and have had to work hard to keep up with the current and important job search approaches. As a result, I have invented some new, proprietary best practices and tools. Invest in yourself! Music, sport, art, animals, figures, history, reading, walking the list is endless. You are more likely to succeed, if you are passionate about what you are doing. What is my consuming desire in life? Dont say its money. What would I do with that money? Lucky are those who can turn their hobby into a means of earning a living, and who love what they do. You may have to compromise. You would probably have to look for a mundane job while you prepare for what you really want to do. You could find employment in the same field, which would give you insight, and which might lead to further avenues and better things. At the very least, you will be lifted into positive thoughts and a pathway to follow. And you will have an AIM in life. Starting your own business isnt for the faint of heart. Its stressful and pretty much demands your complete focus. On the plus side, it can also be a fulfilling experience professionally and personally. And as an offshoot of your research, you will discover the value of networking with those in your field, to the mutual benefit of everybody. You will plan how to treat your resources, by cultivating your customers and looking after your staff. source Keeping Accounts. This is a vital exercise, and can be rewarding, if you go about it the right way. You will learn to make informed forecasts of sales and expenses, which as time goes by and you revisit your plan annually, will become increasingly meaningful. You will do what-if analyses and produce workable cash-flow forecasts, so that you dont run out of money at vital times. A business plan is one of the important things you should have, helping you to create a vision for the future. Résumé Misspellings Can Kill Your Shot at a Job Between spellcheck and autocorrect, and with employers and policymakers alike focusing on STEM skills like math and computer coding, it might be easy to assume spelling is one of those archaic things like cursive writing that doesn’t really matter as much anymore. That assumption could cost you a job. A new paper in Business and Professional Communication Quarterly surveyed more than 500 recruiters on their responses to spelling errors in job applicant cover letters or résumés. The short version: It’s not pretty. While a single spelling error generally won’t entirely torpedo your shot at a job, even just a few can be as big a demerit as not having the requisite experience for the job. This is especially the case if your job requires written communication or meticulous attention to detail. Of course, perfect spelling won’t totally cancel out a complete lack of experience, but Martin-Lacroux found that even a relative handful of misspelled words dampened recruiters’ enthusiasm for a particular candidate significantly. Don’t expect your spellcheck or autocorrect features to catch everything, Augustine warned. “In these cases, technology can be both a blessing and a curse,” she said. Spellcheck won’t flag an error like typing “pear” instead of “pare” or “higher” instead of “hire.” (And we’ve all seen the sometimes-funny, sometimes-cringeworthy “autocorrect fail” compilations that make the rounds on social media.) To avoid this, Augustine said, it’s important to proofread your cover letter and résumé more than once; if at all possible, run it by a friend who does work in a communication-heavy field to catch any errors you might have missed. If you already submitted a résumé and then spotted a glaring typo, there are a few things you can do for damage control. If you submitted an application through an automated applicant tracking system, you might be able to log back on and resubmit the corrected document. If you’re quick enough, you can recall a sent email with a spelling gaffe, but Augustine warned that this is probably dependent on you catching the mistake in a timely manner. If you submitted the résumé directly to someone you know, try resending with a brief note just asking that they refer to the new version. “Loop back and explain you sent an older version and request that they instead review this newly attached version of your resumé,” she suggested. And next time, proofread one more time, just to be sure.
